42 years of waiting — and gold!

In 1983 Yurii Ovcharenko won gold at the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Chicago (USA). 42 years later Artur Kostiuk brought world gold back to Kolomyia as U17 world champion in Athens (2025). Both competed in the under-17 age group at almost the same weight: 81 kg and 80 kg.

  • 🥇 At the U17 Worlds in Athens Artur beat a wrestler from the aggressor country in the semifinal and an Iranian in the final.
  • 🏟️ The celebration took place in the sports school’s newly renovated hall, with pupils, coaches, patrons, former champions and fans. Artur received a cash prize.
  • 💬 Mayor Bohdan Stanislavskyi: “Our athletes are the pride not only of Kolomyia but of the whole country.”
  • 💬 Yurii Ovcharenko: “Congratulations to Artur Kostiuk — may his victories inspire the next generations of wrestlers.”
  • 🙏 Thanks also went to the coaches, among them Hryhorii Shulepa and Ihor Vasylyshyn.
